Writing Arm chairs are one of the most practical forms ever created. They are known for the pad (usually right but available left) attached to the arm. Early pads appeared to be clumsily added to an existing chair design. Over time they were better integrated into the overall composition. This piece is particularly highly developed with a sweeping pad arm balanced by a finely carved knuckle opposite. The chair has the glued arm and bent bow topped by a nicely carved crest rail. Thus, the Three Back name.
